Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Virtual Airline?

A Virtual Airline (VA) is an airline that exists solely in cyberspace, and therefore doesn't sell real airline tickets. Instead it gives purpose and added realism to activities held in a flight simulator. Pilots who fly for a VA do so between certain set airports, with one of the airplanes that are part of the VA's fleet, and at certain scheduled times – just like in a real world airline. A VA is also a meeting place of virtual aviation enthusiasts, and provides flight training to its pilots.

Which simulators are supported by Edelweiss virtual?

Edelweiss Virtual is one of the very few virtual airlines that actively supports all major flight simulators: Microsoft FSX, X-plane, Prepar3D and Flightgear.

Is everything in English or also in German?

Everything is in English. Following in the footsteps of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which specifies English as the primary international language for aviation, our communications and organization operate in English.

Are there minimum membership requirements?

Pilots are required to complete a flight report every three months, to comply with the rules and regulations of the airline and to actively monitor their e-mail address. They also need a flight simulation software (Prepar3D, XPlane or Microsoft Flight Simulator) and an Internet connection.

What I am unavailable for an extended period of time?

Pilots may submit a Leave of Absence which will effectively freeze the account for up to 6 months at a time. This is designed to allow pilots who have irregular schedules to continue participating.

What are the software/hardware requirements?

The majority of our systems are web-based to ensure cross device and platform compatibility. We do require you log flights with ACARSng which presently requires Windows Vista or higher (however there are ways to use it with a simulator running on Windows XP).

How much does a membership cost?

There are two memberships at Edelweiss virtual, either they remain free members and can fly free for the Edelweiss Virtual, or they opt for the association Edelweiss Virtual which costs an annual membership fee of 15 francs. Of course, as a member of the association, they have an electoral vote and may be elected to the Executive Board.
